Bagram Air Base, Military air base in Parwan Province, Afghanistan
Bagram Air Base is a military installation in Parwan Province, Afghanistan, located in the Bagram District roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Kabul. The complex holds three large hangars, dozens of support buildings, and two concrete runways extending more than 3,600 meters (11,800 feet), all set at an elevation of around 1,492 meters (4,895 feet) above sea level.
Soviet forces built the facility in the 1950s and lengthened the main runway to around 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) in 1976 to support their operations. The compound changed hands several times after Soviet withdrawal and later housed US troops for two decades.
The site served as a hub for Soviet operations in the 1950s and shifted hands among different groups over the following decades. After US forces withdrew in 2021, the Taliban took control of the entire compound.
Access to the compound is strictly limited to military personnel, and visitors require special authorization. The facility sits in a remote area with no public transport nearby.
The compound holds a 50-bed hospital, surgical facilities, and a dental clinic originally built to serve military personnel. These medical infrastructures are among the largest of their kind in the region.
