Balkh Province

Balkh province covers 16,186 square kilometers in northern Afghanistan, with Mazar-e-Sharif serving as its capital and primary urban settlement point.

The region functioned as a central point of the ancient Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, maintaining control over trade routes between the Far East and Mediterranean territories.

The province contains multiple ethnic groups including Tajiks, Hazaras, Pashtuns, Uzbeks, and Turkmen, each contributing to the regional Persian-speaking society.

The transportation network supports vehicle movement on 38 percent of roads throughout the year, while 95 percent of urban areas receive electrical power.

Balkh University operates as the second largest educational institution in Afghanistan, with 153 primary schools and 218 secondary schools across the province.
