Herat Citadel, Military fortress in Herat, Afghanistan.

The fortress extends 250 meters from east to west with 18 towers rising over 30 meters above street level and walls measuring 2 meters in thickness.

The Citadel dates back to 330 BCE when Alexander the Great established it as a military outpost, making it the oldest structure in Herat.

The National Museum of Herat inside the citadel displays 1,100 regional artifacts, including pottery, metalwork, and manuscripts from the 10th to 13th centuries.

The Aga Khan Trust restoration project between 2006 and 2011 received 2.4 million dollars from the United States and German governments.

The fortress contains multiple wells in its upper enclosure, which allowed inhabitants to survive extended sieges throughout its military history.
