Malan bridge, Ancient arch bridge in Herat Province, Afghanistan.
Malan Bridge is a stone arch structure spanning the Hari River in Herat Province with twenty-two arches connecting two districts. The crossing extends across approximately 230 meters, allowing it to bridge a substantial width of the waterway.
This structure was commissioned in 1110 by Sultan Ahmad Sanjar of the Seljuk Empire to establish a key transportation connection. This founding made the crossing a central element for trade and movement across the region.
Local stories tell of two princesses who built this structure using unconventional materials according to tradition. This legend remains woven into how people in the area understand and speak about the crossing.
The structure remains passable year-round and serves vehicles and pedestrians as a main crossing route. The arch design provides a stable passage that resists high water conditions.
Unlike many other crossings over this river, this structure has survived multiple major flood events unharmed. This durability is often attributed to the thoughtful design of its arches.
