Yu Aw Synagogue, Iranian architecture synagogue in Momandha Quarter, Herat, Afghanistan.
Yu Aw Synagogue is a mudbrick building in the Momandha Quarter of Herat that displays traditional Iranian architectural elements. The interior features a main prayer hall with decorative stucco work still visible on its surfaces.
Construction began around 1393, and the building underwent major renovation between 1788 and 1808 during the Qajar period. These changes reflect centuries of Jewish settlement in the region.
The synagogue contains three Hebrew inscriptions above the stairway on the north wall, demonstrating the integration of Jewish traditions with Persian architectural styles.
The building is located in an active part of the old city and can be viewed from outside. Visitors should expect uneven ground and traditional means of access.
The basement now serves as a workspace for an employee of the Department of Historic Monuments Preservation. This practical use helps maintain the site while keeping it integrated into local administration.
