Korab, Mountain massif on Albania and North Macedonia border
Korab is a limestone mountain range straddling the border between Albania and North Macedonia, with terrain shaped by layers of shale, sandstone, dolomite, and other sedimentary rocks. The massif has a prominent peak that overlooks the surrounding valleys and plateaus.
The massif appeared in ancient mythological traditions and shaped how people in the region understood their landscape for centuries. In recent eras it became a focus for exploration and mountaineering activity among regional climbers.
The mountain is known locally by different names and has long served as a meeting point for herders and climbers from both sides of the border. Seasonal grazing on the slopes remains part of the rhythm of life in surrounding valleys.
Climbing here requires careful planning due to the international border crossing and different regulations on each side. Check weather conditions before setting out, as conditions change quickly at altitude.
The highest point of this range is remarkable because it serves as the tallest peak for two neighboring countries at once. This makes it one of only a handful of summits in Europe with this unusual distinction.
