Epirus is a region in northwestern Greece and southern Albania that stretches from mountain ranges inland to the coastline along the Ionian Sea. The terrain shifts between high peaks, river valleys and forested slopes that descend toward the water.
Greek tribes settled the area in antiquity and maintained their own dialects and sanctuaries. Control passed to Rome and later shifted between Byzantine, Ottoman and local rulers over many centuries.
