Naziresha Mosque, Ottoman mosque in Elbasan, Albania
Naziresha Mosque is a prayer house in central Elbasan with a traditional layout featuring a main prayer hall, entrance portico, and a minaret on the right side. The structure was restored in 2012 with a lead dome replacing the original red tile roof.
Built in 1599 by Naziresha, daughter of a Nazir official, this structure represents a commission by a female patron during the Ottoman period. It gained designation as a Cultural Monument of Albania in 1948.
This mosque serves as a center for the local Muslim community, where daily prayers and religious celebrations bring people together. It remains woven into the fabric of Elbasan's religious and social life.
The mosque sits along the E852 road in central Elbasan and is easily reached on foot. Keep in mind this is an active place of worship, so appropriate clothing and respectful behavior are expected.
The minaret was positioned on the right side rather than in the more typical central location, giving the building an unusual orientation. This arrangement is less common for mosques of this era and makes it architecturally distinctive.
