Royal Villa of Durrës, Royal residence in Durrës, Albania
The Royal Villa of Durrës is a summer residence situated on a hilltop with three sides opening toward the Adriatic Sea. The structure stands approximately 98 meters above sea level and offers views across Durrës bay.
Architect Kristo Sotiri designed this summer residence in 1937 for King Zog I, Albania's final monarch before World War II. The building was constructed during a period when the nation was establishing its modern identity.
After the monarchy ended, the residence became a place where international leaders gathered for meetings and official receptions. The building served as a venue for important state events and diplomatic occasions.
The building is not open for interior visits, but you can view the exterior and enjoy bay views from the hilltop location. Late afternoon offers the best light for appreciating the coastal views and the structure's appearance.
The building's architectural design incorporates the shape of an eagle, reflecting Albanian national symbolism in its overall form. This structural detail often goes unnoticed at first glance but becomes apparent when viewing the structure from different angles.
