Pogradec Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Pogradec District, Albania.
Pogradec Castle is a medieval fortification ruin located on a hillside overlooking Lake Ohrid at approximately 900 meters elevation. The site contains scattered stone walls and foundation remnants that reveal the fortress's former layout and construction.
The site began as an Illyrian settlement in the 5th century BC and may correspond to the ancient city of Enkelana mentioned in historical records. Over time it developed into a fortified position that guarded the region strategically.
Local residents regard the ruins as part of their regional identity and occasionally visit them during hiking trips through the surrounding hills. The remains hold meaning in community stories and connect people to their past.
Access to the ruins is via a hillside path that is walkable from town, especially when weather is clear and dry. The elevation and terrain require sturdy footwear and some physical effort to reach the site.
From the ruins visitors look down more than 205 meters to Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes with its own distinct ecosystem. This unusual geology makes the view from above particularly striking.
