Rugova Mountains span northwestern Kosovo with limestone formations, deep gorges, waterfalls, and glacial lakes that reach 2,403 meters at Hajla peak. The landscape is shaped by dramatic rock faces and mountain streams that create natural corridors through the valley.
Development began in the 1970s when the area became known for winter sports and mountain recreation. In 2013, the Parliament officially established it as a national park.
The thirteen villages here keep local traditions alive through traditional clothing, dances, and music that you can see during local celebrations and gatherings. These customs remain meaningful to people who live in the region and shape how communities come together.
Visitors can reach the mountains by minibus or taxi from Peja, with regular services to different starting points and villages. The best time to explore is late spring and early autumn when weather is more stable and trails are easier to access.
The mountains contain numerous unexplored cave systems, including Bukuroshja e Fjetur Cave with water-lined passages and small underground lakes within its depths. These hidden caves remain difficult to access but offer adventurous visitors a glimpse into the region's geology.
