Surb Astvatsatsin Church

Surb Astvatsatsin Church is an Armenian church with a three-nave basilica structure without a dome located in Kanaker-Zeytun. Carved khachkars from the 17th century are embedded in its exterior walls, reflecting the long craft tradition of the place.

After the devastating earthquake of 1679, the current structure was rebuilt between 1693 and 1694 with funding from Khoja Panos, a wealthy Yerevan resident. The reconstruction during this period reflected the resilience and religious determination of the local population.

The church remains an active place of worship for the Armenian Apostolic community and shapes religious life in Kanaker. Visitors can experience the daily devotion of the faithful and sense the place's significance for local people.

The building is constructed from local tuff stone and displays classic Armenian construction techniques that make it solid and easy to visit. Main secondary spaces are positioned on the north and south sides, making orientation inside straightforward.

The khachkar stones on the exterior walls date from an earlier period than the church building itself and were deliberately incorporated into the new structure. This practice shows how important art objects were preserved across generations.
