Stepan Shahumyan Monument, Granite statue in Kentron District, Armenia.

The Stepan Shahumyan Monument is a granite statue depicting a standing figure with crossed arms positioned against a gray basalt wall featuring seven vertical pylons. The reddish granite of the main figure contrasts sharply with the darker basalt background, creating a striking visual composition.

The monument was inaugurated in 1931 to honor Stepan Shahumyan, whom Lenin appointed as Extraordinary Temporary Commissioner in the Caucasus. Its construction occurred during a period when the Soviet Union was creating memorials throughout its territories to commemorate revolutionary and political figures.

The monument reflects how Armenian artists blended Soviet and local architectural traditions during the early 20th century. Visitors walking through the square can observe the specific style chosen to honor a significant political figure of that period.

The monument is located on Shahumyan Square near Republic Square and is easily accessible on foot from central Yerevan. The open plaza provides clear views from all angles and easy circulation around the site.

The monument employs an uncommon pairing of materials combining reddish granite for the figure with dark basalt for the backdrop wall, a choice that was distinctive for its time. This material contrast ensures the statue remains visible and prominent from different viewing angles throughout the square.
