Surp Hovanes, Christian church in Mastara, Armenia
The Church of Saint John features a large central dome supported by four projecting apses arranged in a square layout with inward-facing circular walls.
Built in the 5th century and reconstructed in the 7th century under Bishop Teodoros Gnuni, the church contains relics of John the Baptist brought from Caesarea.
The structure incorporates numerous khachkars, traditional Armenian stone crosses, and displays architectural elements common to medieval Armenian religious buildings.
Located 41 kilometers from Yerevan in Aragatsotn Province, the church stands near other historical structures including Aruch Cathedral and Artavazik Church.
The church design combines a square external form with circular internal spaces, creating an architectural composition different from other Armenian churches.
