Magili, Natural cave in Vayots Dzor Region, Armenia
Magili is a natural cave in Vayots Dzor Region featuring a network of underground chambers and passages. The cavities span several tens of meters in width and reach about 15 meters in height.
Archaeological finds within the cave date to the Neolithic period and include human bones and stone tools. These discoveries show that people occupied this underground location from early times.
The cave sits near Areni village, where researchers uncovered traces of ancient wine production including clay vessels and grape remains showing signs of fermentation. For people in the region, it represents evidence of early craft skills and ways of living.
Visiting requires a certified guide, and the entrance accommodates only one person at a time due to its narrow opening. Plan for a guided tour as this is the safe and informative way to explore the cave.
The cave maintains a constant temperature between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius throughout the year. These stable conditions create a refuge for numerous bat species, many of which appear on conservation lists.
