Surb Zoravor Astvatsatsin Church
Surb Zoravor Astvatsatsin Church, Armenian church in Shahar District, Yerevan, Armenia
Surb Zoravor Astvatsatsin Church is an Armenian church building featuring a three-nave basilica structure without a dome, located in central Yerevan. Decorative religious stones from the 17th century are incorporated into its exterior walls, adding visual interest to the facade.
The church was built in the late 1600s after an earthquake roughly 15 years earlier destroyed a previous monastery on the same location. A wealthy benefactor financed its reconstruction, supporting the return of a religious center to this site.
The church is named for its association with power and strength, referencing a significant religious manuscript that once made it an important spiritual center. This naming reflects how local communities understood the place as a source of strength and devotion.
The church is located on a named street in the city center and is easily accessible to visitors walking through the area. Regular services take place here, so you may encounter worshippers during your visit or plan your timing accordingly.
Inside the church is a special shrine honoring an apostolic saint, added more than a century after the building itself was completed. This later addition shows how the site continued to gain religious importance long after its original construction.
