Cordillera del Sarao, Mountain range in Los Lagos Region, Chile.
The Cordillera del Sarao is a mountain range along the Pacific coast in southern Chile, with peaks reaching around 900 meters. It is covered by native forests and cut through by river valleys that open toward the sea.
The range was named after Juan Saraos, a 19th century landowner with extensive properties in the area. This naming reflects the early European settlement and control of the territory.
Huilliche and Mapuche communities live in reservations throughout the range and maintain their traditional practices today. Visitors can experience this living presence in small settlements and across the landscape.
Access is available from the municipalities of Purranque, Fresia, and Los Muermos, which all offer starting points for hikes. The area is best explored during warmer months when trails are easier to walk.
Where the range meets the Pacific Ocean on its western edge, marine erosion has created terraces between steep cliffs made of metamorphic rock. This striking meeting point of land and sea shapes a distinctive landscape visible from a distance.
