Jornadas por la Rehabilitación en Magallanes, Annual rehabilitation fundraising event in Punta Arenas, Chile

Jornadas por la Rehabilitación en Magallanes is an annual charity campaign run since 1988 by the local Lions Club to fund the Cruz del Sur rehabilitation centres in Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and Porvenir. The campaign closes with a televised benefit show of three blocks and more than ten hours, broadcast by regional channels and TVN Red Austral, ending with the final tally after two in the morning.

The Lions Club of Punta Arenas has run this fundraising campaign since 1988, collecting money for children and adults with disabilities. Its Cruz del Sur rehabilitation centres in Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and Porvenir serve around 2,000 patients a month. A new centre beside the Hospital Clínico de Magallanes opened on 28 September 2015 and was inaugurated by President Michelle Bachelet on 11 January 2016.

The televised finale runs over ten hours in three blocks, closing with the last tally after two in the morning, carried by regional channels such as ITV Patagonia, TV RED, UMAG TV, SurTV and TVN Red Austral. The campaign was long called Jornadas por el Niño Impedido Magallánico; the name changed in 2011 because the Cruz del Sur centres treat people of all ages, not only children.

Regional channels such as ITV Patagonia, TV RED, UMAG TV, SurTV, EGM Channel, Pingüino Multimedia and TVN Red Austral carry it, with Santiago hosts Jorge Aedo, Ivette Vergara and Cristián Briceño among those drawing artists to the benefit show.

The program operates independently from other national fundraising campaigns and serves patients from southern Chile and neighboring Argentine regions. This local independence allows it to respond to the specific needs of this remote area.
