Monumento natural Laguna de los Cisnes, Protected wetland in Tierra del Fuego Province, Chile.
Monumento natural Laguna de los Cisnes is a protected wetland along the Strait of Magellan coast in Tierra del Fuego. The reserve covers around 25 hectares and sits in flat terrain characterized by lakes and marshes, positioned north of Porvenir.
The site received protected status in 1982 when authorities designated it as a national park, with a reclassification coming shortly after. This change reflected a new approach to safeguarding the fragile coastal landscape.
Indigenous Yámana peoples relied on this lagoon for food and sustenance over many centuries. The landscape still carries traces of their deep connection to these waters.
A gravel road of around 8 kilometers reaches the monument and stays passable year-round, making it an accessible destination. The route runs along the coastline and gives visitors views of the surrounding landscape from the road itself.
The lagoon hosts two swan species that find refuge here during their migrations, including black-necked swans and Coscoroba swans. Chilean flamingos and various duck species also inhabit these waters, making it a vital rest stop along their seasonal routes.
