Tierra del Fuego Province

The province spans 22,592 square kilometers of western Tierra del Fuego island, featuring numerous small lakes, coastal areas, and mountainous terrain.

The discovery of gold deposits in 1879 triggered significant immigration to the province, leading to the establishment of permanent settlements throughout the region.

The Yaghan and Selk'nam indigenous communities maintained their traditional ways of life in the province until European settlement altered their territories.

The province connects to mainland Chile through maritime routes across the Strait of Magellan, with regular ferry services departing from Punta Arenas.

The province contains Bahía Inútil, a large bay named by British geographers due to its inadequate conditions for anchoring ships.
