Reserva Costa Atlántica, Nature reserve in Rio Grande, Argentina
Reserva Costa Atlántica extends along the eastern shore of Tierra del Fuego and includes tidal flats, bays, and coastal areas. The reserve protects different habitats where water and land meet, supporting a variety of animal and plant life.
The area was recognized as a Ramsar site in 1995 and received protection status through provincial law in 1998. These measures came from the need to safeguard the unique coastal ecosystem and the migratory birds that stop here.
The reserve functions as a research center where scientists monitor ecosystems and study the behavior patterns of migratory birds and marine species.
San Sebastian Bay offers good observation points, especially during migration periods when thousands of shorebirds gather. Comfortable clothing and binoculars help you watch the birds from a distance.
The site is the southernmost location on both the Ramsar list and the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. This extreme southern place is visited yearly by more than a hundred bird species on their long journeys between North and South America.
