Iglesia de Guacarhue, Historical church in Quinta de Tilcoco, Chile
The Iglesia de Guacarhue is a church located in Quinta de Tilcoco featuring two intersecting naves that meet at the main altar. The structure has adobe walls and is topped with traditional clay tile roofing.
Italian architect Joaquín Toesca designed this church building in 1778, later becoming known for the Palacio de La Moneda and Santiago Cathedral. The structure was erected during a period when religious architecture was gaining importance in the region.
The church interior contains religious images brought by Dominican priests, with artworks dating to the 18th century. These pieces reflect the spiritual traditions that clergy from abroad established in the local community.
After the 2010 earthquake, the church underwent complete restoration with new adobe bricks covered in cement. Metal mesh reinforcement was added to make the structure more resistant to future tremors.
Local adobe craftsmen from the Cachapoal Valley contributed their knowledge to maintain traditional earthen construction methods. This handcrafted skill proved essential during the post-earthquake restoration work.
