Built in 1891 during President Balmaceda's administration, this facility formed part of the foundational urban development alongside the Liceo Neandro Schilling.
The structure combines neoclassical elements in its northern administrative section with industrial architecture in the southern cell blocks, reflecting late 19th-century institutional design.
Located at José Argomedo 418, northwest of Plaza de Armas, the building stands near the Governorship of Colchagua and San Fernando Municipal Hall.
The prison registered approximately 250 detentions between September and November 1973, marking its role during the military period in Chile.
