Laguna de Los Cristales, Natural lagoon in O'Higgins Region, Chile
Laguna de Los Cristales is a high-altitude lagoon in the O'Higgins Region situated at about 2,286 meters (7,500 feet) in the Andes, known for its clear water. The basin sits surrounded by snow-capped peaks that create a distinctive mountain backdrop.
The lagoon took its present form following the construction of a dam in 1976 that was built to increase water supply for irrigation in the Rengo area. This infrastructure project significantly raised the water level after completion.
Local communities have long shared stories about hidden treasure, known as an entierro, said to lie beneath the water. These legends continue to shape how people see and talk about this place.
The lagoon sits at high elevation and is accessible for swimming, hiking, and wildlife observation, with the surrounding mountains offering additional exploration opportunities. Visitors should prepare for rougher conditions and changeable weather typical of high-altitude locations.
The water is so clear that rocks and structures beneath the surface are often visible, which inspired the lagoon's name. This exceptional transparency makes it a rare and visually striking place in the high Andes.
