Hotel Termas el Sosneado

Hotel Termas el Sosneado is an abandoned hotel complex at 2180 meters elevation beside the Atuel River with three pools filled with turquoise water. The buildings sit within a rugged mountain landscape marked by steep slopes and sparse vegetation.

The hotel complex was built in 1938 by the Buenos Aires and Pacific Railway Corporation and operated until its closure in 1953. The decline followed the end of an era when mountain resorts in South America attracted strong interest from foreign guests.

The site represents a period when thermal baths in the Andes became sought-after wellness destinations for traveling people from around the world. The abandoned buildings still recall the draw that hot springs and mountain air once held for visitors.

Reaching the site requires a roughly two-hour drive on unpaved roads, with the final stretch demanding a sturdy vehicle with adequate ground clearance. It is wise to travel with plenty of water, fuel, and spare equipment since help is difficult to access in this remote region.

The complex lies just a few kilometers from where a Uruguayan Air Force plane crashed in 1972, making it a draw for historically minded travelers. The site serves many expeditions as a reference point in this remote mountain region.
