Edificio Ex Intendencia, Valparaíso

The Edificio Ex Intendencia is a historic government building at Plaza Sotomayor in Valparaíso, distinguished by its French neoclassical facade with tall windows and a central dome. The four-story structure features ornate stone detailing and currently serves as headquarters for Chile's Navy Command.

This building was constructed after a devastating earthquake in 1906 destroyed the original structure, with work completed in 1910. It was designed to mark Chile's centennial and symbolize the city's recovery and progress.

The building anchors Plaza Sotomayor, a space that remains the seat of local governance and a gathering point for the city. Walking past, you notice the official presence and sense how this corner holds weight in Valparaíso's daily rhythm.

The building sits directly on Sotomayor Street at the main plaza, making it easy to locate when visiting the city center. Note that it currently houses a military command, so interior access may be limited to exterior viewing.

Inside, the building preserves an original marble staircase and furnishings imported from Paris during its early years. These refined details were restored to their original blue color during renovation work that began in 2013.
