Puente Alto, Capital city in Cordillera Province, Chile
Puente Alto is a commune in the Cordillera Province of Chile, located east of central Santiago in the Metropolitan Region. The settlement sits near the foothills of the Andes and ranks among the most populated municipalities in the country.
The settlement was recognized as an independent administrative unit in the nineteenth century after the reorganization of Santiago Province. Its formal elevation to city status came late in that century through a regional decree.
Municipal council members from multiple political parties collaborate to govern this residential community of over half a million inhabitants.
The area lies on the eastern edge of greater Santiago and can be reached by public transport, including buses and metro lines from downtown. Streets mostly follow a grid pattern, making it easier to find your way through residential neighborhoods.
A public park on the western edge of the commune offers free water sports on artificial lakes. The facility has become a popular weekend destination for outdoor activities in recent years.
