Cervecería Ebner, Former brewery complex in Independencia, Santiago, Chile
Cervecería Ebner is a large former brewery complex featuring Renaissance Revival style architecture that spans 18,000 square meters and displays a rusticated front facade with a distinctive corner tower. The industrial compound now houses the Mall Barrio Independencia shopping center, with portions of the original facade and tower preserved as historical markers.
German immigrant Andrés Ebner purchased the land in 1880 and converted it into a major brewing operation that began in 1888. Production continued until 1978, when operations ceased and the site was eventually transformed into a commercial complex.
The building mixed living quarters with industrial work, as Ebner made his family home on the upper floors while brewery and office operations filled the floors below. This blend shows how factory owners lived during the period.
The site is accessible today as a shopping center where you can view the preserved architectural elements during a visit. The best time to explore is during normal business hours when all areas are open to the public.
The facility introduced the Bilz soft drink to Chile in 1902 and became the country's first major ice producer with daily output around 50,000 kilograms. These two innovations made the brewery far more than just a beer production site.
