Casco histórico del Cementerio General

The historical section of Santiago General Cemetery spans 28 hectares and contains 900 architectural structures built before 1930, including mausoleums and tombs.

Bernardo O'Higgins established the cemetery in 1821, creating the first public burial ground in Santiago after Chile gained independence from Spain.

The cemetery features 237 sculptures and numerous architectural styles, from Egyptian and Greek to Roman and Gothic designs, with colored stained glass.

The cemetery section holds approximately two million burials and remains under the administration of the Recoleta Municipality, with guided tours available.

The grounds include specialized areas such as the Circus Artists Mausoleum and Latin America's first transgender memorial created in 2018.
