Casco histórico del Cementerio General

The historical section of the general cemetery encompasses a large property and contains approximately 900 structures built before 1930, including elaborate mausoleums and burial monuments. The grounds display a diverse collection of grave structures that developed over many decades.

The cemetery was established in 1821 as Chile's first public burial ground after independence from Spain was declared. Over time it became the final resting place for prominent figures who shaped the nation's history and development.

The grounds function as an open-air architecture showcase where mausoleums display Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Gothic styles side by side. Colored stained glass and carved monuments reflect how families expressed their identity and status through burial structures.

Visitors can explore the grounds on marked pathways and should wear sturdy footwear as walkways can be uneven in places. Guided tours are available to help navigate the complex layout and provide context for the various structures.

The grounds feature a dedicated mausoleum honoring circus artists and house Latin America's first transgender memorial. These two spaces reflect how the cemetery has evolved to recognize diverse communities and their stories over time.
