Carmencita, Folk saint grave at Santiago General Cemetery, Chile
The tomb of Margarita del Carmen Cañas, located on Lircay Street within Santiago General Cemetery, displays over 70 gratitude plaques from visitors.
Margarita del Carmen Cañas, who worked under the name Carmencita, moved to Santiago in 1933 during the economic depression and passed away in 1949.
The site transformed into an animita where people leave offerings and request favors, following Chilean traditions of popular religious practices.
Visitors can reach the grave by entering through the Recoleta Street entrance, near Cementerios Metro station, and following the path toward Lircay Street.
Despite the factual records of Carmencita as a 37-year-old woman, multiple fictional stories circulated about her identity, including tales of a young girl.
