Antiguo Hospital San José, Historical monument and former hospital in Independencia, Chile.
The Antiguo Hospital San José is a former hospital in Independencia, Chile, displaying colonial-style architecture throughout its buildings. It features a distinctive main facade, a chapel with a marble altar, a wooden bell tower, and spacious hallways that connect the treatment areas.
Construction of the building took place between 1841 and 1872 under the direction of French architect Victor Henry Villeneuve. It began as El Salvador Lazaretto in response to a smallpox epidemic affecting the region.
The Sisters of Charity ran the hospital and dedicated themselves to caring for patients with infectious diseases. Over time, the institution became known for specialized tuberculosis treatment, serving this role until the early 20th century.
The former hospital now functions as a cultural center offering various programs, including services for elderly care. Visitors can explore the restored spaces and historical structure during regular hours of operation.
The site was strategically positioned next to the General Cemetery to allow direct access during major disease outbreaks. This proximity reflects the practical realities and sanitary challenges faced by medical practice in the 1800s.
