Monumento a los Héroes de Iquique, Santiago de Chile, Naval memorial monument at Plaza Capitán Prat, Santiago, Chile.
Monumento a los Héroes de Iquique is a 25-metre lighthouse-like pyramid on a circular stepped platform about 20 metres across at Plaza Capitán Prat, with an interior spiral staircase to the top. At its western base, José Carocca Laflor's bronze group shows Arturo Prat, 3.60 metres tall, gazing seaward with his left hand raised, beside Sergeant Juan de Dios Aldea, a sailor with an axe ready to board, and an allegory of the Republic.
Inaugurated on May 28, 1962, under mayor and intendant Ramón Álvarez Goldsack, it was the first monument raised in Santiago to the heroes of the naval combat of Iquique, fought during the War of the Pacific. The bronze figures were modelled in plaster by José Carocca Laflor, while architect Gustavo García Postigo designed the base and tower and died shortly before the work was finished.
The monument shows Captain Arturo Prat alongside Sergeant Juan de Dios Aldea and other sailors in a naval combat scene. The bronze figures at the base represent these seafarers and their role during a pivotal moment in Chile's history.
The monument occupies Plaza Capitán Prat at the corner of 21 de Mayo and Ismael Valdés Vergara streets, in the historic centre of Santiago. A spiral staircase inside the 25-metre tower leads to the top; the bronze group and the engraved letter are at the western base, while the female allegory faces the Andes on the eastern side.
The eastern side of the memorial displays a female allegory looking toward the mountain range, creating a connection with the landscape. An important speech delivered before the battle is also engraved on the structure.
