Chilean National History Museum

The Chilean National History Museum sits at Plaza de Armas in Santiago, housed in the former Royal Courthouse building. The collection fills rooms with archaeological finds, military equipment, paintings, and religious objects from different time periods.

The museum opened in 1911 by combining collections from earlier separate institutions into one space. This merger created a single location to trace Chile's story from earliest times through the twentieth century.

The exhibits present how Chilean society changed from pre-Columbian times through the mid-twentieth century. Visitors encounter personal objects, artworks, and documents that reveal how people lived during different periods.

The 1884 clock tower within the building holds a spiral staircase that climbs through seven floors to a high balcony. From there, visitors can look out over Plaza de Armas and the surrounding historic district.
