Cápsula Bicentenario, Time capsule in Plaza de Armas, Santiago, Chile
Cápsula Bicentenario is a sealed stainless steel container buried beneath Plaza de Armas in central Santiago. It holds 132 items, including coins, stamps, audio recordings, and handwritten recipes selected by the public and institutions.
The capsule was buried on September 28, 2010, during Chile's bicentennial celebrations. It will remain sealed until 2110 to mark three centuries of independence.
The capsule holds items that matter to Chileans, such as traditional games, recipes, and sports equipment. These objects show what the people of the country considered worth preserving in 2010.
The capsule is buried directly beneath Plaza de Armas, which is easy to reach and within walking distance of many other sites. You cannot see it from above since it is entirely underground.
A message from the 33 miners trapped at the San Jose Mine is one of the most touching items in the capsule. This note captures one of the most gripping events in recent Chilean history.
