Amolanas Viaduct

The Amolanas Viaduct is a steel bridge near La Serena that crosses a deep ravine. Two parallel structures carry traffic together on Route 5 North, supporting the main highway that connects the region.

The first bridge was built in the 1950s, and a second structure was added in the late 1990s. This expansion was necessary to handle growing traffic on this vital connection.

The bridge represents a milestone in Chilean engineering, connecting communities along the Elqui Highway and supporting regional development.

The support pillars have special dampers that absorb movement during earthquakes and keep the structure stable. A monitoring system with 12 sensors continuously tracks the bridge to ensure it remains safe.
