Guangualí

Guangualí is a small coastal settlement in the Coquimbo Region situated near the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by avocado plantations. The village sits within a valley in a landscape shaped by natural formations and agricultural land.

The settlement takes its name from Mapudungun, the Mapuche language, with word elements alluding to wheat quality and animal confrontations. This linguistic origin reflects early connections between the region and Mapuche peoples.

Local artisans create traditional stoneware ceramics in earthy colors at a workshop visible next to the village square.

To reach Guangualí, take the road from the Quilimarí crossroad at kilometer 199.7 on Route 5, which leads through the Quilimarí River valley. The terrain can become slippery during wet weather, so sturdy footwear is advisable.

Archaeological sites near the village contain rock carvings and stone mortars known as piedras tacitas, offering insights into the activities of earlier inhabitants. These prehistoric tools and artworks reveal how the area was used by earlier peoples.
