Iglesia de la Merced, Petorca, national monument of Chile
Iglesia de la Merced in Petorca is a neogothic and neoclassical structure completed in 1857, built with brick, marble, and carved wood. Its entrance features Corinthian columns, while the interior houses a wooden Christ figure from 1660, a silver tabernacle, and carved wooden elements crafted by local artisans.
The church was founded by the Jesuits in 1640 and is one of the oldest structures in the Valparaiso region. The current building was completed in 1857 and combines architectural elements from that period.
The church stands on Petorca's main plaza and serves as a gathering place for the local community. The annual September celebration of the Virgin of Mercy draws families together and reflects traditions passed down through generations.
The church is located in central Petorca at the corner of La Matriz and Manuel Montt streets, directly facing the main plaza and easily accessible on foot. The surrounding area features small shops and traditional streets that create a calm setting for visiting.
Inside the church is a wooden Christ figure brought by the Jesuits in 1660, making it one of the oldest artworks in the building. This piece is often overlooked by visitors but holds particular significance for the local community.
