Laguna Conchalí, Natural reserve and lake near Los Vilos, Chile
Laguna Conchalí is a wetland covering about 51 hectares near Los Vilos on the Chilean coast. The system receives water from Estero Conchalí and connects to tidal movements of the Pacific Ocean.
The area was designated as a protected natural reserve in 2000 through Chilean Decree No 41. This decision aimed to ensure the preservation of the ecosystems and their inhabitants.
The wetland hosts more than 70 bird species, including black-necked swans and spoonbills, which visitors can observe year-round in their natural habitat. Birdwatchers regularly visit to experience these species and watch their daily activities.
The reserve is located west of Route 5 Norte near Punta Chungo and is easy to reach. Visitors should bring suitable footwear and binoculars for bird observation.
The marsh vegetation creates specialized habitats where fish spawn and macroinvertebrates find food sources. This role as breeding and feeding ground is essential for local biodiversity.
