Cenco Costanera, Shopping complex in Providencia, Chile
Cenco Costanera, formerly Mall Costanera Center, is a shopping centre in the Costanera Center complex in Providencia, Santiago, opened on 12 June 2012 and owned by Cencosud. It has 268,000 m² of total surface and 134,000 m² of rentable area across seven themed levels with 320 commercial premises, from the Easy and Decathlon stores on the ground floor to the Cineplanet cinemas and Happyland on level 6. The atrium is built of stacked slabs and broad rectangular pillars in polished dark grey stone, with clear glass balustrades and metal handrails on each level, a raised planter with a curved white rim, palm trees rising from the ground floor and a dark blue curved wall behind the planter.
Cencosud planned the opening for 12 April 2012, but Horst Paulmann postponed it to 27 May and then to 8 June because the mitigation works required for the permit were unfinished. The mall finally opened on 12 June 2012 at 15:30 with 330 stores. With 268,000 m² total and 134,000 m² rentable, it ranks third in rentable area in South America, after Parque Los Aviadores and Leste Aricanduva in São Paulo.
The mall's name comes from the Costanera Center complex it occupies; it was long known as Mall Costanera Center before being renamed Cenco Costanera. Its seven themed floors are organised by category, from services and supermarkets on the lower levels to the Sabores Costanera food court on level 5 and Cineplanet cinemas on level 6. The food court seats more than 2,000 people and looks out over the city.
Five underground parking levels hold 4,500 vehicles. The mall occupies seven themed floors, from services and Easy on the ground floor to Cineplanet cinemas and Happyland on level 6. Access to the Sky Costanera observation deck, on floors 61 and 62 of the Gran Torre Costanera, is through the ground floor of the mall.
The mall's best-known fixture is a water cascade 8 metres wide and 12 metres tall that forms images and text from falling droplets, designed and built by the German firm OASE. It hangs inside the atrium, above the planters and palms, and many shoppers walk past without looking up.
