Gran Torre Costanera, Skyscraper in Las Condes district, Santiago, Chile
Gran Torre Costanera is a skyscraper in the Las Condes district that rises 300 meters across 62 above-ground floors and 6 underground levels. The postmodern glass and steel structure forms the vertical centerpiece of the Costanera Center complex.
Work began in 2006 and paused during the 2008 financial crisis before the tower was completed in 2013. César Pelli designed the structure as part of a large mixed-use project combining retail, offices, and residences.
The name refers to the vast shopping center at the base of the tower, which has become a meeting point for people from all over Santiago. The rooftop observation deck draws local families and visitors who come to take in the view of the city and the surrounding peaks.
A visit to the Sky Costanera observation deck requires purchasing a ticket on the ground floor, and on clear days the view extends all the way to the Andean range. Most visitors spend about an hour on the upper floors and often combine their trip with a walk through the shopping center below.
The observation deck sits higher than any other publicly accessible point on the South American continent, offering a full panorama from roughly 300 meters up. On clear winter days visitors can spot snow-covered peaks from the rooftop that rise above 6,000 meters (19,685 feet).
