San Guillermo National Park

The protected area spans 166,000 hectares across the high Andes region, featuring desert landscapes, grasslands, and wetlands at elevations between 2,100 and 6,380 meters.

The territory transformed from a provincial reserve in 1972 to a national park in 1998, leading to enhanced protection measures for local wildlife populations.

The reserve contains archaeological sites including Cerro las Tórtolas, Cerro las Flechas, and Cerro del Toro, which preserve evidence of ancient indigenous settlements.

Access to substantial sections of the park remains restricted due to government safety regulations related to high elevations and severe weather conditions.

Scientists monitor puma-dominated food webs through GPS tracking systems to understand predator interactions with vicuñas and guanacos in this mountain environment.
