Uyu Uyu

Uyu Uyu is an archaeological site with stone structures and enclosures located on the right bank of the Qullqa River at 3,600 meters elevation. The layout shows several connected areas that served residential and other purposes during early Andean times.

This settlement developed in pre-Hispanic times as part of early Andean cultures in southern Peru. Its stone construction and mountain location demonstrate how people strategically built communities in challenging terrain during that era.

Pottery and tools found here show how early Andean people lived and organized their communities in this remote mountain area. These objects reveal daily routines and social structures that developed in the highlands.

This site lies in a remote mountain area and requires planned travel from Arequipa along with adequate water and food supplies. Visitors should be prepared for changing mountain conditions and bring warm clothing.

The name comes from the Aymara language, where the repeated word 'uyu' indicates a system of yards or ceremonial spaces. This doubled word form was a way early cultures expressed complexity and connection in naming important places.
