Chicon, Mountain summit in Urubamba range, Peru.
Chicon is a mountain summit in the Urubamba range located in the Cusco Region, rising to 5,530 meters above sea level. The peak features a distinctive central stone formation that resembles a heart shape and sits above Urubamba town.
The peak was first climbed in 2014 when climbers established a major route and reached the summit. This early exploration opened the way for the trekking routes that are used today.
The name comes from the Quechua word 'ch'iqu', meaning workable stone, reflecting the geological importance this peak holds for local communities. People in the region have maintained a long relationship with the mountain and its natural resources.
The trek takes three days starting from Pampa Corral and passes through Queuña forest with two nights spent at mountain camps. The final leg includes a five-hour descent to complete the journey.
A glacial lake sits at the summit, visible on clear days and marking an important point for climbers making the final push. From this lake, visitors can see views across the Sacred Valley, Chinchero, and other peaks that surround the area.
