Sahuasiray, Mountain summit in Calca Province, Peru
Sahuasiray is a mountain in the Urubamba range located in Cusco Department. The summit reaches approximately 5,800 meters and features steep rock faces along with year-round snow coverage on its highest points.
The mountain was first climbed in 1963 via the northern ridge, with a southern route successfully ascended in 1968. These two early expeditions established the main climbing approaches for later mountaineers.
The mountain name combines Quechua words 'sawa' meaning matrimony and 'siray' meaning to sew, reflecting the indigenous linguistic heritage of the region.
The town of Calca serves as the main access point, where local guides can be hired for climbing expeditions. You should be well accustomed to high altitude and bring appropriate gear for snow and ice conditions.
The mountain holds a significant topographic position with a prominence of around 1,950 meters, marking it as one of South America's most independent peaks. This geological characteristic makes it notable among mountaineers and geographers due to its isolated standing.
