Ancasmarca, Mountain summit in Cusco Region, Peru

Ancasmarca is a mountain summit in the Urubamba range within Cusco Region, standing at approximately 5,200 meters above sea level. The peak sits in the northeastern section of this mountain chain, positioned among other prominent ridges and slopes.

In 1575, Spanish chronicler Cristobal de Molina recorded a traditional tale of shepherds and children who sought refuge on the mountain during a great flood. The story reflects how this place held significance in regional oral traditions dating back centuries.

The mountain carries a name rooted in the Quechua language, with meanings that reference either blue or eagle combined with the word for village. Local people have long maintained stories connected to this place and their ancestral ties to the region.

Anyone attempting to reach the summit must prepare for high altitude and challenging terrain, which requires significant physical endurance. The remote location means visitors should arrange their own supplies and route planning beforehand.

Local stories tell of animals including llamas sensing signs of natural events long before people could detect them. Such observations reveal how mountain communities understood and interpreted the natural world around them.
