Ancasmarca, Mountain summit in Cusco Region, Peru
Ancasmarca rises to an elevation of 5,198 meters in the Urubamba mountain range, northeast of Huamanchoque and southeast of Canchacanchajasa mountains.
Around 1575, Spanish chronicler Cristobal de Molina documented a traditional story about a shepherd and his six children who found refuge on Ancasmarca during a great flood.
The mountain name derives from Quechua language, combining either anqas meaning blue or anca meaning eagle with marka meaning village.
Mountaineers attempting to reach the summit at 5,198 meters need considerable preparation due to altitude challenges and remote location access.
Local llamas, according to regional folklore, predicted an incoming flood by observing unusually high positioned stars in the night sky.
