Huaca Cao Viejo

The Huaca Cao Viejo features a 27-meter-high adobe pyramid decorated with detailed frescoes depicting warriors, priests, and ceremonial scenes in multiple colors.

The structure, built between 100 AD and 700 AD by the Moche civilization, served as a religious and administrative center in northern coastal Peru.

The discovery of the Lady of Cao mummy in 2005 revealed female leadership roles through her burial with weapons, gold artifacts, and visible tattoos.

Located 60 kilometers northwest of Trujillo, the site includes a modern museum displaying artifacts, textiles, and a digital reconstruction of the Lady of Cao.

The pyramid contains a series of painted reliefs preserved by adobe bricks, showing life-sized figures engaged in ceremonial activities and sacrificial rituals.
