Huaca Cao Viejo, Archaeological pyramid in Magdalena de Cao District, Peru.

Huaca Cao Viejo is an adobe pyramid rising about 27 meters high in Peru's northern coastal region. The walls feature colorful painted reliefs showing warriors, priests, and religious ceremonies, while an attached museum displays artifacts and detailed representations of remains discovered at the site.

The structure was built between 100 and 700 AD by the Moche civilization and functioned as a religious and administrative center. The pyramid was later buried under sand layers, which protected its painted surfaces over many centuries.

The site reveals how women held powerful positions in Moche society, as shown through the burial of the Lady of Cao with weapons and elaborate ornaments. Visitors can observe the tattoos and personal belongings that marked her high status.

The site is located about 60 kilometers northwest of Trujillo and is easy to explore with guided tours and clear walkways. The attached museum provides shade and detailed explanations, making it a comfortable visit especially on hot days.

The wall surfaces were preserved for centuries under sand layers, keeping the original colors and carved details in rare completeness. This allows visitors today to experience Moche artistic techniques as they were originally intended.
