Huaca Esmeralda

Huaca Esmeralda is an ancient site with three levels covered in carved animal figures and diamond-shaped patterns. The different elevation levels are connected by ramps that allow you to explore all sections of this pre-Hispanic complex.

This site was built during the early period of the Chimu culture and likely served as a residence for a regional leader. It demonstrates how the Chimu developed their skills in construction and artistic design during that era.

The carved reliefs show animals and geometric designs that reflect how the Chimu people expressed their beliefs and social order through art. These patterns were meaningful to ancient visitors who came to this place for ceremonies and important occasions.

The site is located near Trujillo and is accessible on foot, though surfaces are uneven and shade is limited throughout the area. It is helpful to visit in early morning or late afternoon to avoid intense heat and direct sun exposure.
