Statua antropofica, Monument in Plaza de Armas, Trujillo, Peru
The Anthropic Statue is a three-tiered marble monument standing at the center of Plaza de Armas. The structure displays four sculptures at its base and three figures in the middle section that express different emotional states.
The monument was inaugurated in 1929 and commemorates Trujillo's independence declaration from 1820. German sculptor Edmund Moeller designed it after winning an international competition with over 100 submissions.
The monument's name refers to the freedom and independence it represents to the city. The four sculptures at its base depict art, science, commerce, and health, areas central to how the community sees itself.
The monument sits in the middle of a public square and is easily visible from all sides. You can observe it anytime at no cost, and it serves as a natural meeting point for exploring the surrounding area.
The middle section displays three robust statues showing human figures in different postures that convey a transition from struggle to liberation. This dynamic composition makes the work an artistic statement about movement and inner transformation.
