Coliseo Gran Qhapaq Ñan, estadio y pabellón multiusos en Cajamarca, Perú
The Coliseo Gran Qhapaq Ñan is a large multipurpose hall in Cajamarca with a capacity of over 8,000 people spread across three levels. The building features an international-standard playing surface for volleyball, basketball and futsal, modern LED screens, flexible event spaces, and service areas on each floor.
The project began in 2008 with soil studies and a foundation stone ceremony in 2010, but was delayed by swampy ground conditions that complicated construction costs. The hall opened in January 2018 with funding from the local municipality and partial support from mining company Yanacocha.
The name Qhapaq Ñan comes from Quechua, referring to the ancient Inka road. Today the hall serves the city as a center for sports and community gatherings where local families regularly come together.
The hall is located on Avenida Atahualpa near Cajamarca University, making it easy to reach for students and residents. Visitors will find bathrooms, cafes, and clear signage on each level, making navigation and comfort straightforward throughout the building.
The hall served as a vaccination center during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating its versatility beyond sports events. It has also hosted international volleyball competitions like the South American Youth Championships.
