San Matías Gulf, Bay in Patagonia, Argentina.

San Matías Gulf is a bay along the Atlantic coast of Patagonia, Argentina, lying between Río Negro Province to the north and the Valdés Peninsula to the south. The seafloor is shaped by sand waves and submarine ridges that create complex underwater formations throughout the gulf.

The gulf took its present form around 11,000 years ago, when rising sea levels after the last ice age flooded a low-lying depression that had been dry land. That process gradually gave rise to the marine environment that exists today.

Fishing has long shaped life along the shores of the gulf, and the small harbors scattered along the coast give a clear sense of how local communities depend on the sea. Nets, boats, and the rhythm of the tides are part of everyday life here.

Navigating the gulf calls for caution, since the underwater ridges and sand waves can produce unexpected currents. The waters are also actively used for commercial fishing and research, so it is worth planning any visit on the water with that in mind.

San Matías Gulf is one of the very few places in the world where organized open-water swimming events take place alongside southern right whales. The whales return to these waters regularly, which is what makes such encounters possible.
